Creative Chat With Jenn Zellers

My creative passions have gotten a bit less... traditional lately. I know that most people don't see technology as creative, but I do. Having programming experience, I found that I had to exercise my creativity like CRAZY to solve coding problems. Since starting to work with Google Analytics, and especially while creating the Conquer Google Analytics! course, I've found that I've used a lot of creative muscle to conquer snags that I've run into.

1. QUICKLY INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO US. WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

I'm Jenn, and I run The Spare Room Project with my husband.  We started TSRP because I was getting burned out, physically and mentally, from my day job, and felt like I had lost my creativity.  In our journey to find my creativity again, we ended up helping others we knew find theirs, and TSRP was born to spread the mission of finding your creativity in limited time and space.   You can learn more HERE.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR CREATIVE PASSIONS? WHAT DO YOU JUST LOVE TO DIVE INTO AND GET LOST IN?

My creative passions have gotten a bit less... traditional lately.  I know that most people don't see technology as creative, but I do.  Having programming experience, I found that I had to exercise my creativity like CRAZY to solve coding problems.  Since starting to work with Google Analytics, and especially while creating the Conquer Google Analytics! course, I've found that I've used a lot of creative muscle to conquer snags that I've run into.  That said, I really enjoy more 'traditional' creative pursuits: writing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, jewelry creation, etc.  Since I was homeschooled, I had a lot of time to pursue those types of creative activities, and I tend to fall hard when I find a creative outlet that I love, so to be honest, I just like to get lost in whatever catches my fancy at the moment!

3. WHY DOES CREATIVITY MATTER TO YOU AND HOW DO YOU MAKE TIME FOR IT?

Creativity is SO important to me!  I've watched friends start to shrivel, so to speak, because they weren't pursuing their passions anymore, and I've been through that myself.  It took me at least six months to a year to come out of the Burn-Out Pit that I had sunk into, and I want to help others avoid that fate, hence The Spare Room Project!  I'm not big into planners, but I now use a bullet journal (thanks to you, Emily!), so I just try to add some sort of creative 'task' into each day.  Even if it's something really small, it gives me a 'win' when I finish it, and it gets my brain working, which helps me finish other projects.  Win-win!

4. WHAT DOES YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

I plan.  A lot.  Probably too much.  With a lot of my smaller creative projects, I just jump in and hope for the best, though.  If it's a larger project, I plan it out and then talk myself into executing it (not always my favorite step).  I don't know that I've really paid enough attention to my actual process, because it tends to just come naturally.  But when I run into a block, it would really help to know what the next step should be!

5. SOMETIMES, CREATIVES GET STUCK OR BLOCKED AND STRUGGLE TO CREATE. HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU? WHAT HAPPENED?

I tend to get stuck in the planning stage.  I just really love planning and not so much executing, usually (probably also why I like consulting, because I get to plan for other people and don't have to execute as much!).  If it's a big project, I sometimes have to amp myself up to get my plan in motion, because I suddenly feel overwhelmed, even though I have all of the steps mapped out.  Go figure!

6. HOW DID YOU PUSH PAST THIS BLOCK AND GET BACK TO CREATING?

If it's something that will benefit others, whether it be a handmade gift or my Conquer Google Analytics! course, it's a lot easier to get myself to get moving on it!  Sometimes I have to think of ways that I can make the project benefit someone else, even if it's just that I'll be happier and thus more enjoyable to hang out with (yes, weird motivation, I know).

7. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR OTHER CREATIVES WHO AFRAID TO CREATE OR WHO STRUGGLE TO FIND TIME, MOTIVATION, OR INSPIRATION TO CREATE?

Even if it's weird, knowing what motivates you is key!  Figure that out, and you'll get further faster.  Knowing what detracts from your creativity, whether it be multitasking or a myriad of excuses, will enable you to combat those creativity enemies.  Talk out your process with someone else (or even with Google Drive's voice-to-text tool) - I figured out a couple of my blocks through this interview!
